In Lagos, Nigeria, one young musician is rapidly gaining attention. Meet Jeremiah Oluwajenyo, popularly known as JeremiahFJ Sax, a 13-year-old saxophonist whose musical journey started at the tender age of three — and whose dream is nothing less than to play like smooth-jazz legend Kenny G.
Early Beginnings and Musical Awakening
Jeremiah’s interest in the saxophone began when he was just three years old. During a family talent show, he saw a young boy playing the saxophone and immediately told his father: “I want to play that.” His father soon got him an instrument — after checking with the doctor to ensure it wouldn’t pose health risks for a child his age. He began playing, but paused around age nine because he felt too young and discouraged. The encouragement of his family brought him back to his instrument, and he resumed with even greater focus.
Training, School & Current Milestones
Jeremiah attends Agape Baptist College, Lagos, currently navigating the third year of junior secondary school (JSS 3) via online lessons while he competes in the national talent hunt show De9ja Spirit Talent Hunt. He lives in competition camp in Calabar alongside his father-manager. His training is supported by mentors Mr Jerry Omole, Mr Sunday Okwu and Mr Williams at a music school outside of his church.
A Big Dream: Playing Like Kenny G
In Jeremiah’s own words, music is his passion, and one of his major goals is to collaborate or perform alongside idols like Kenny G, Dave Koz, BJ Sax and Nathaniel Bassey. He doesn’t just want to play the saxophone; he wants to make people feel the music — much like Kenny G has done worldwide.
His aspiration to emulate Kenny G reflects both his ambition and his willingness to work. He blends his love for gospel, instrumental jazz and Afro-rhythms, aiming to craft a distinctive sound that honors his influences while rooted in Nigerian culture.
Challenges, Vision & Impact
Even at such a young age, Jeremiah faces common hurdles — discipline, balancing schoolwork with rehearsals, and navigating nerves in competition. He admits there were times he felt discouraged watching peers perform better. But his vision remains clear: to become a full-time musician while also exploring his interest in computers and coding.
His message to other young creatives: “Parents should support their children early, so they can grow and develop their gifts fully.” He also calls for more studios and opportunities in Nigeria to nurture talent.
What’s Next?
As Jeremiah continues to perform in the De9ja Spirit competition, his goal is to build his visibility and win the prize money (₦30 million) which he hopes to use to set up a music studio and help other children discover their talents. (Source)
